In search of the perfect Handbag…

In part 1 of our series ‘In search of the perfect handbag’ we look at the why’s, styles and colours.

Is it just me, or do we all suffer from that primal urge to buy a new handbag every two weeks? After spending my rent money on hand bags, I knew I should probably find a solution. That’s when I started to wonder, is it possible that I am just looking for the perfect bag? My handbag soul mate! So it’s probably not possible to find a single bag suitable every single occasion, or to match every outfit I own! However, I realised it makes sense to find a versatile bag that looks great, and still be used regularly. So my hunt began, and hopefully my tips can help you find the ultimate handbag.

Practical magic!

First off try and think what you want your definitive handbag to be used for. There is no point shopping for a huge bag if you are never going to fill it. Think practically, Do you spend your time go out partying, or on day trips with the kids? This will have a massive effect on how much you carry around with you, or what outfits you will want to match with! It will also give you an idea of features you need for the bag, such as mobile phone compartments, multiple pockets etc.

Style conscious?

Next consider the style of bag you would like, a clutch bag probably won’t be as versatile as a shoulder bag for example. Many handbags have removable or adjustable straps, so you can have a grab, shoulder or across body bag all in one! This would be the perfect solution if you want to have something for day and evening wear. The strength of strap might be an issue too, don’t choose something with a slim line, flimsy strap if you need to carry a lot with you.

Is the future bright?

Another vital aspect of operation ‘Handbag’ is the colour. Take a look in your wardrobe and see if you have any colour trends. If you often wear green, would an olive bag help accent your style? Or would it clash horribly with the purple dress you always wear.  Be sensible and consider how wardrobe friendly a coloured bag will be. Sometimes choosing the classic black or brown is the best option, they never go out of style and can still be a stunning addition to your ensemble.
